Beginning therapy can feel difficult and vulnerable. I offer a warm, supportive, and non-judgmental space where patients can safely explore their experiences, relationships, and challenges. I listen with empathy and work collaboratively with each client to better understand their concerns, recognize their strengths, and support meaningful growth.
My therapeutic approach is eclectic and flexible, depending on a patient’s needs and goals. In it, I make use of my training in psychodynamic and relational theory, as well as trauma-informed CBT, acceptance and commitment therapy, and Motivational Interviewing. I find that this allows me to assist patients flexibly as they work to examine patterns in behavior or thought that may be unhelpful, and work on understanding how they can lead a more authentic and meaningful life.
I have experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds who are struggling with anxiety, depression, ADHD, PTSD, self-doubt, shame, relationship and family-of-origin difficulties, and interpersonal conflict. I also have worked extensively with patients navigating life transitions, gender and identity issues, and grief.
David Hammerschlag, LCSW, has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Sarah Lawrence College, where he studied creative writing and psychology. His Masters in Social Work is from Fordham University. He is certified in TF-CBT, and is currently studying psychoanalytic psychotherapy at the William Alanson White Institute.
